NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior F Chad Anderson scored a pair of goals, and senior G Ryan Klingensmith stopped all 12 shots that he faced to lead the No. 3-ranked Norwich University men’s ice hockey team past No. 9-ranked Curry College, 4-0, Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena in the opening round of the 2010 Times Argus Invitational.
The Cadets (8-0-1) will face Potsdam State (6-5-1) in the Times Argus Invitational championship game on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. The Bears defeated New England College, 4-3, in the first semifinal contest. The Pilgrims (3-4-1) and Colonels (7-1-1), meanwhile, will square off in the third-place game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Both Norwich and Curry enjoyed quality scoring chances during a scoreless first period. The Cadets outshot the Colonels 9-4 during the frame.
Norwich’s pressure paid off early in the second period when Anderson scored on a rebound to put the Cadets on top 1-0 at the 1:46 mark. Senior D Steve Coon started the play when he moved the puck out of the Norwich zone and onto the stick of sophomore F Emmond Bell. Bell then raced in along the right side boards and fired a shot from the right-hand faceoff circle. Curry G Steven Jakiel made the save on Bell’s attempt, but he could not locate the rebound, and Anderson swooped in and slipped the puck between Jakiel’s legs.
The Cadets, who outshot the Colonels 17-4 in the middle frame, made it 2-0 in the waning moments of the second period when freshman F Blake Forkey netted his seventh goal of the year. Bell and Anderson picked up assists on the goal, which came with just 10 seconds left in the stanza.
Norwich added a pair of insurance goals late in the third period to cement the victory. Anderson added his second tally of the contest—and seventh of the season—at the 14:30 mark when he took a feed from Forkey and scored from close range.
Freshman F Colin Mulvey accounted for the fourth goal when he deflected senior F D.J. Fimiani’s shot past Jakiel at the 16:46 mark. Mulvey’s marker, his third of the year, was assisted by Fimiani and senior F Craig Serino.
The four goals were more than enough for Klingensmith, who saved four shots in each of the three periods to earn the win between the pipes.
For the game, the Cadets outshot the Colonels by a 39-12 margin. Jakiel made 35 saves for Curry in the loss.
