Scrubb Leads WBB Past Anna Maria, 69-58

PAXTON, Mass. – Led by Julia Scrubb's (Stowe, Vt.) 23 points and eight rebounds off the bench, the Curry College women’s basketball team defeated Anna Maria College, 69-58, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) matchup at the Fuller Activities Center on Thursday night. The Colonels improve to 7-10 on the year and 2-4 in the TCCC, while the AMCATS fall to 7-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
 
Despite jumping out to a fast 13-2 lead to start the game, Anna Maria trailed 31-27 at intermission.  The bench was instrumental in Curry’s first-half comeback, receiving 19 points from their reserves while Anna Maria’s bench only mustered two points.  The Colonels were relentless following their initial shot, outscoring Anna Maria 14-4 on second-chance points. 
 
Tonique Adkins (New Haven, Conn.) paced the offensive attack in the first frame, leading all AMCATS will nine points.  Anna Maria also received six points each from Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) and Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass.) with Maggie Sielawa (Webster, Mass.) chipping in with four points and six rebounds.
 
Freshman Julia Scrubb (Stowe, V.T.) led all scorers with 11 points during the half for Curry, while Cortney Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) was a force in the paint, adding nine rebounds. 
 
Although the AMCATS finished on a 16-7 run during the final five minutes of regulation, it was too little, too late for Anna Maria, as Curry finished with the 69-58 victory.  Curry’s bench proved dominant again in the second half, contributing 31 points in the period and 50 total for the game.  Julia Scrubb added 12 more points off the bench in the second-half, giving her a game-high 23 points to go with eight rebounds for the game. Joneiha Veiga (Brockton, Mass.) led all scorers with 14 points in the second half, giving her 18 points and six rebounds in the game on 7-12 shooting from the field.
 
Chelsea Blair played a strong second half for Anna Maria, adding nine points and eight rebounds.  Blair finished the contest with a double-double, contributing 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Both Tonique Adkins and Alison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass.) added six points for the AMCATS in the second frame, with McCarthy also tallying four assists. 
 
The Colonels will play again on Saturday when they host Nichols at 1:00 p.m. The AMCATS return Saturday, continuing TCCC play at home against Eastern Nazarene at 1:00 p.m.
