MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Women’s Tennis team opened its 2010 campaign with an 8-1 win over visiting Rhode Island College on Thursday afternoon in Milton.
The Colonels (1-0) captured four of five singles matches played and both doubles contests played. With only five players, Rhode Island College (0-1) was forced to forfeit both the #6 singles match and the #3 doubles match.
Freshman Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, MA) defeated junior Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI), 6-0 and 6-0, at #1 singles. Rookie Emily Mongello (Plymouth, MA) knocked off junior Shannon Bilodeau (Seekonk, MA), 6-3 and 6-1, at #3 singles. Freshman Lauren Chuha (Reading, MA) took care of sophomore Kayla Morris (North Smithfield, RI), 6-1 and 6-0, at #4 singles, and junior Kathleen Rush (Waterbury, CT) defeated senior Suzi Healy-Wurzburg (Uxbridge, MA), 6-3 and 6-1, at #5 singles. RIC’s lone point came at #2 singles where sophomore Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) won in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-1, over senior Lauren Maloney (Feeding Hills, MA).
In doubles, Mongello and Chuha took care of Batek and Bilodeau, 8-1, at #1. Mulrooney teamed with Devin Curley (Marshfield, MA) to knock off Belanger and Morris, 8-2, at #2.
