Baseball Falls Twice to Visiting Wentworth in TCCC Play
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College lost a pair of games to Wentworth, 8-6 and 3-1, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) baseball action Sunday afternoon in Milton. With the two-game sweep, the Leopards improved to 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Colonels fell to 9-12 overall and 5-7 in TCCC play.
GAME ONE

The Leopards opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Senior Matt Jordan (Concord, NH), singled to right field off Curry southpaw Matt Drew (Waltham, MA), and was driven home by a Conner Flisnik (Marcy, NY) double to left field, making it a 1-0 game.
The score would stay the same for two more frames until Wentworth jumped back on the board with five runs in the top of the fifth. The big inning began with another Flisnik RBI double scoring Jordan. Doug Papuga (Branford, CT) then doubled to left field, driving in Flisnik. Papuga would advance to third on a passed ball and cleanup hitter Ben Danker (Branford, CT) walked. Jake McManus (Hopkinton, NH) then hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Papuga, making it 4-0 for the visitors. Third basemen Mike Diodato (Ashbury, NJ) then stroked a two-out single to left field setting up junior Justin Bolla’s (Groveland, MA) two-run double to left center.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Curry finally got on the board with a two-run single to right field by Matt Drew (Waltham, MA), scoring Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) and Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA).
The sixth inning was explosive for both teams and began with a two-run shot over the right field fence by Leopards’ pitcher Papuga, making the score 8-2. Curry responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to two. But Leopards’ reliever Matt Jordan (Concord, NH) came in to close the game in the seventh. He walked two Curry batters, but secured the save by striking out freshmen Matt O’Neill (Milton, MA).
Papuga went 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, striking out seven while allowing four earned runs. Drew took the loss going five innings and giving up six runs while striking out four.
GAME TWO

The nightcap was a pitchers’ duel, with both starters going the distance. Wentworth lefty Adam Farrar gave up six hits and struck out four in the victory. Curry’s Matt O’Neill (Milton, MA) gave up four hits and struck out seven without allowing an earned run in the 3-1 loss.
In the first inning, Danker hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jordan for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Flisnik hit a flare that fell between three Colonels’ fielders, scoring Alex Wong (Lewiston, ME).
Curry picked up a run in the fifth on a Kyle Connors’ (Stoughton, MA) infield single that allowed Drew to score, and cut the Wentworth lead in half. In the final frame, Flisnik hit a sacrifice fly to the right-field corner, bringing home sophomore Ryan Delgado (Wareham, MA) with the game’s final run.
Both teams are back on the diamond this Tuesday. Wentworth will travel to Eastern Nazarene for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader, while Curry will host Johnson & Wales in a single, nine-inning, non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
