Baseball Opens Conference Play With a Sweep of Gordon
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College swept visiting Gordon College 5-4 and 5-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Milton. Curry improved to 5-5 overall and opened TCCC play with a 2-0 record. Gordon fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
In game one, the Colonels broke on top, plating four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The big blows were provided by senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, MA), who tripled home sophomore Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA) to open the scoring; and senior Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, MA), who followed with a double to left field that brought home Sweeney and senior Tony Luciani (Weymouth, MA).
The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning. The Fighting Scots received an RBI groundout from junior Stephen Myhren (Vernon, NJ). Curry got what proved to be the winning run when Luciani reached on an error, scoring Sweeney. Gordon closed to within 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning, getting a pair of runs on a double by sophomore Eric Wolak (Trumbull, CT) and one on a single by Myhren.
Senior Cory Collins (Whitman, MA) picked up the win, striking out eight over 4 1/3 innings to improve to 1-1. Junior Chris Costa (Lynnfield, MA) recorded his first save, tossing the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or a run. Freshman John Kanas (East Moriches, NY) fell to 0-2, surrendering four earned runs over six innings.
In game two, senior James Page (Weymouth, MA) shut out Gordon on five hits and one walk over six innings, moving his record to 1-1. Curry got the only run it would need in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Sweeney. Luciani, junior Ben Blaisdell (Mansfield, MA) and freshman Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) also drove in runs for the Colonels. Senior Steve Kefalas (Wenham, MA) absorbed the loss, giving up four earned runs, nine hits and a walk in six innings of work.
