Baseball Grabs Two From Eastern Nazarene, 4-2 and 4-0

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College baseball swept its conference doubleheader with visiting Eastern Nazarene College, winning the opener 4-2 and the nightcap, 4-0. The Colonels are now 9-10 overall and 5-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), while the Lions fall to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in league play.
GAME ONE

The pitching duel lasted until Curry led off the scoring with Sam Barron’s (Florence, MA) towering home run to deep left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. The visiting Lions would quickly respond in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Max Pugh (San Diego, CA) walked and would later score on an RBI sac fly by Juan Rivera (Pelham, NH). The Colonels would soon answer back when Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, MA) walked, followed by a Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, CA) single to right. The throw to get McDonald at third was errant, and he would trot home to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the sixth, the see-saw battle would continue when Justin Denbow (Readfield, ME) homered to center to knot the score at 2-2. The Colonels would again answer in the bottom of the frame with a two-run rally. Senior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) doubled to left and advanced to third after a passed ball. With two outs in inning, junior Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) would double to center scoring Hawn with the go-ahead run. The two-out rally would continue when freshman Matt O’Neill (Milton, MA) doubled to center scoring Drew.
Senior captain Mike Hughes (Middleboro, MA) pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while striking out six in the win and improved to 2-1 on the season. O’Neill would close out the game for the Colonels with his first save of the year.
Steve Oehlschlaeger (Dallas, TX) went the distance for the Lions and took the loss falling to 1-2. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.

In the second game, the Colonels got off to a quick start by scoring in the first inning. The run was manufactured by a trio of players. Hawn singled to left field, followed by a Drew single to left. McDonald later singled to center field scoring Hawn for the RBI.
Curry would pick up two more runs in the second inning with a two-out rally. Freshman Kyle Connors (Stoughton, MA) singled to left field and Cornejo doubled to left center driving in Connors. Hawn would then walk, followed by a Cornejo stolen base and a Barron single which allowed Cornejo to score and gave the hosts a 3-0 edge.
Both teams’ starting pitchers would cruise through the next several frames until the Lions’ Jeremy Cook (Hatfield, PA) entered the game relieving Steven Doyle (Weymouth, MA) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA) earned a walk and then stole second base and eventually scored on an error, completing the game scoring at 4-0.
Junior Joe Carrig (Irvine, CA) got the start for the Colonels, and threw a complete-game shutout. He gave up five hits and no earned runs while recording five strikeouts and improved to 1-2 on the season. Doyle was charged with the loss and pitched five innings, giving up seven hits, and three earned runs while striking out five. The loss was Doyle’s first on the year as he now is 2-1.
Curry returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Nichols College for a noon doubleheader. The Lions also play on the road on Saturday as they will travel to Salve Regina for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
