Baseball Edged 4-3 By #3 Regionally-Ranked Babson
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College fell 4-3 to Babson College in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon in Milton. The Beavers, currently ranked third in New England, improved to 22-9. The Colonels slipped to 12-16. [Box Score]
After 3 ½ scoreless innings, Curry put the first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) singled to center to score Sam Barron (Florence, MA). Babson responded with a run in the top of the fifth, after Dave Ahern (Bedford, MA) singled to left to bring home Trevor Boyce (Canton, MA) and tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams were then held scoreless until the top of the eighth, when the Beavers’ Brendan Collins (Abington, MA) hit a two-run single to left field, plating Boyce and Chris Warren (Medfield, MA). The Colonels tied the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring on an error by the shortstop and again on an RBI single to center off the bat of Barron. In the ninth, Babson scored the game-winning run after Derek Richards (Framingham, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Travis Jonasson (Needham, MA) to cross the plate.
Andrew Aizenstadt (Norwell, MA) got the start for the Beavers, giving up one run on five hits, while striking out nine in seven innings of work. Derek Richards (Framingham, MA) picked up the win, giving up one earned run on two hits, while striking out three over two innings. Brian Pipines (Cresskill, NJ) got the start for Curry, giving up no hits or runs in two innings pitched. Matt O’Neill (Milton, MA), the last of seven pitchers used by the Colonels on the day, surrendering an unearned run in the top of the ninth.
Curry returns to action on Saturday, visiting Roger Williams for a conference doubleheader with an 11:00 a.m. start. Babson resumes play on Friday, hosting UMass Boston for a single nine-inning, non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
