Baseball Knocks Off Visiting Johnson & Wales, 9-6
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Johnson and Wales, 9-6, in non-conference baseball action Friday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improved to 15-19 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 19-17-1. [Box Score]
Johnson and Wales put two early runs on the board in the first after Pete Rosa (Ambler, PA) hit a two-run single to center. In the bottom of the frame, Curry tied the game at 2-2 after Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) hit an RBI single to left to score Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA), and Kyle Connors (Stoughton, MA) laid down a squeeze bunt to bring home Matt Drew (Waltham, MA).
After holding the Wildcats scoreless in the top of the second, the Colonels plated three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came on a fielder’s choice, while the second run came after Brandon Lewis (Barrington, RI) hit an RBI single to third base. The third run was scored after Hawn singled to center. In the following inning, Johnson and Wales pulled within one after scoring two runs.
In the fifth, the Wildcats reclaimed the lead after Zach Boyes (West Warwick, RI) hit an RBI triple to right center and then crossed home plate on a throwing error. Curry responded in the bottom of the inning, re-taking the lead after a two-RBI single to left off the bat of Ben Blaisdell (Mansfield, MA). The Colonels added a run to their lead in the sixth, after Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, MA) stole home, and padded their lead with another run in the seventh, after Connors scored on a groundout.
Mike Hughes (Middleboro, MA) got the start for Curry, giving up four runs on six hits in three innings of work. Zach Walker (Hingham, MA) picked up the win, giving up one earned run on seven hits, while striking out five in six innings pitched. Alex MacKay (Sanford, ME) absorbed the loss for Johnson and Wales, giving up nine runs on 10 hits, while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings on the mound.
The Colonels return to action on Tuesday, as they travel to Keene State for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. The Wildcats host Emerson College Saturday at 12:00 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
