Curry Baseball Team Conducts Free Skills Clinic for 11-Year Old Milton All-Stars
January 5, 2012
MILTON, Mass. – Members of the 2012 Curry College Baseball Team took two days (December 28-29) teaching instructional baseball to an 11-year old all-star team from the Town of Milton.
Curry Athletics launched a department-wide initiative this past fall to get more involved with the community and raise awareness for all of the College’s athletic teams. Players have taken time out of their daily routines to visit schools in Milton during lunch and recess to interact with the students. They have spent some of this time reading books to the kids, helping them with their daily lessons and playing games during recess.
During the recent Holiday break, Colonels’ players and coaches held a two-day clinic for an 11-year old Milton all-star team. Curry student- athletes were able to demonstrate some simple drills for the kids, and help them learn critical fundamentals as they prepare for their first season on a modified diamond. The group of 11-year olds won’t be making the jump to the big diamond in the spring, but they will in fact be playing on a field which is larger than the typical Little League diamond. This will be their first experience where big-league rules apply.
“I love teaching and playing baseball with the little guys,” said junior Matt Rodriguez, who is from nearby Quincy. “It’s fun to be around good players who really want to learn and get better. And I know it’s not just me. Other teams and players from Curry are doing the same thing with their individual sports.”
Junior Shayne McDonald from Cambridge added: “It gets exciting this time of year. The kids are really excited to be on campus playing baseball and using the College’s facilities. You can feel that the season is right around the corner.”
“It’s great for the Athletic Department to visit schools in our town, and to invite teams to our campus for some personal instruction and demonstration,” said Head Coach Jay Schnabel. “It’s important that youth players are being taught correctly. Fundamentals are so important. Who better to teach the kids in our town than the college players who live here? Hopefully all the kids who have come here will get a chance to experience NCAA Athletics someday.”
