Milton, MA – The Curry College baseball team dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to Western New England on Saturday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond, falling late 4-3 in the opener before an 8-2 setback in game two.
Game #1:
Curry battled throughout the opener but was undone by a pair of late runs in the ninth inning as Western New England rallied for the 4-3 victory.
After a scoreless start, Western New England struck first in the third inning on an RBI double from Ryan Montini. Curry responded in the fourth, as Joey Kazlauskas ripped an RBI double to tie the game before taking a 2-1 lead later in the inning on an error.
Starting pitcher Henry Marino was strong on the mound, allowing just one run over 6.2 innings while striking out five. The Golden Bears tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single from Connor Cowern.
Curry briefly regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Michael Frausto came around to score on a wild pitch, making it 3-2. However, Western New England answered in the ninth with two sacrifice flies to plate the go-ahead runs.
Kazlauskas led Curry offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Jorge Rodriguez added two hits. Reegan Thomas took the loss in relief despite Curry holding the lead entering the final frame.
Game #2
In the second game, Western New England jumped out early and never looked back, securing the doubleheader sweep with an 8-2 win.
The Golden Bears grabbed two runs in the first inning and extended their lead with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Noah Schermerhorn. Western New England added two more runs in the fifth to push the advantage to 7-0.
Curry got on the board in the fifth, scoring twice on an RBI groundout by Danny Leyva and a sacrifice fly from Anthony Figueroa to cut the deficit to 7-2. However, that would be as close as the Colonels would get.
Ryan Murphy and Jorge Rodriguez each recorded two hits for Curry, while Blake Fuller added a hit and scored a run.
Lucas daCosta took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs over five innings of work. Jack Keane provided four innings of relief, surrendering just one run.
