Balanced Offense Leads Colonels Past Bears
Milton, MA - The Curry Football team won their season opener for the first time since 2018, on Friday, defeating Bridgewater State 35-28. With the win, the all-time series between the two teams in tied at 13 wins each. The Colonels have won each of the last two meetings.
After the Colonels couldn't get anything going on their opening drive, the Bears marched down to the Curry 20 yard line before stalling out. They attempted a 32-yard field goal, but were unable to convert, as freshman Jaiden Williams came around the edge, and blocked it. sing the momentum from that, the Colonels offense moved down the field, with quarterback Anthony Santino completing six passes, the last of which found Wesley Williams in the end zone for a 22-yard score. The two teams would trade punts the rest of the half, and the Colonels took a 7-0 lead into the break.
The Bears would tie it up on their second half opening drive, scoring in just over a minute. After forcing a punt, they then went on a 14-play, 92-yard drive that took up just under seven minutes. The last play, a 4th and 11 from the Curry 25, saw the Bears score on a passing TD, taking a 14-7 lead.
After a quiet first half, for his standards, Montie Quinn began to get going in the Colonels next drive. Behind some blocking of Danny Doris, he ran for 14 and eight yards on the first two plays of the drive. While the drive ended in a turnover on downs inside the 10, it set the tone for what was yet to come. The defense would force a three and out on the next drive, and the offense started the next drive at the BSU 44-yard line. It took just one play, as Quinn broke a couple tackles, and scampered into the endzone for the first TD of his senior year.
After another BSU three and out, it was the Quinn show again, as he went for eight yards, five yards, and then a highlight play 32 yard touchdown run to put the Colonels up 21-14. The defense then made another stand, this time with a Lucas Leander interception near mid field. The Colonels pushed the lead even further, this time on an Anthony Santino TD pass to Matthew Bowen, making it 28-14.
The Bears would not go away, and they scored to make it 28-21 with just over two minutes remaining. But a failed onside kick, and a facemask penalty, put the Colonels at the BSU 15-yard line, and Quinn would traverse those 15 yards across three plays, culminating in a 6-yard TD, his third of the game. It also marked his 39 career rushing TD, passing Mike Waithe '88 for second most in program history. Quinn, already the program's career rushing yards leader, trails only Raphael Zammit's 44 rushing TDs.
The Bears would score again, but would fail on the onside kick. The Colonels would take two knees, and end the game with a 35-28 victory.
For Quinn, it was his fifth straight game eclipsing 150 rushing yards, dating back to last year. It was his 16th time in 31 career games reaching that mark. His 171 rushing yards, combined with 33 receiving yards, put him over 200 total yards for the game.
While Quinn was definitely the star, transfer QB Anthony Santino gave the Colonels something they missed last year, and that was a passing threat to compliment Quinn's explosiveness on the ground. With 14 completions on 24 attempts, Santino had the third most completions by a QB since 2022. He threw for 177 yards, and the two touchdowns. It was a balanced receiving corp for the Colonel, as Colin Ridley, Patrick Leary, Wesley Williams, Quinn, and Matthew Bowen each had over 25 receiving yards.
An unsung hero for Curry, but not surprising, was punter and kicker Omar Aboutoui. A first team All-CNE member last year, Aboutoui was stellar on Friday. He went 5/5 on extra points, had a touchback on all six kickoff attempts, and landed three punts inside the 20.
The Colonels defense, while giving up 28 points, was a constant presence in the BSU backfield, as they had 11 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Eli Vasquez-Bastardo accounted for two of those with two sacks.
Up Next - The Colonels will look to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2017, when they travel to Coast Guard next Saturday for a 1pm game.
