Football Falls in CNE Championship Game; Will Play in Fusion Bowl
Beverly, MA - The Curry Football team fell on Saturday in a defacto CNE Championship game at Endicott, losing 45-17. The Colonels are now 8-2 on the season and 6-1 in CNE play, while the Gulls move to 9-1 and 7-0, and clinch the CNE championship. The loss snapped a seven game win streak for Curry.
After a great 44-yard return on the opening kickoff by Jordan Depina, the Colonels offense quickly got on the board, as running back Montie Quinn scored from 28-yards out. The Gulls responded immediately to tie it, but then the two defenses settled in and each team got a couple stops. Endicott kicked a FG to open the second quarter, but that lead did not hold up. The Colonels went up 14-10 on a 31-yard TD pass from Anthony Santino to Matthew Bowen. After another defensive stop, the offense got into FG range, and Omar Aboutoui made a short 24-yarder to give the Colonels a 17-10 lead at the break.
While the Colonels entered the half with momentum and hopes of an upset, the Gulls quickly stomped those feelings away, outscoring the Colonels 35-0 in the second half.
Montie Quinn once again broke the 200-yard mark, rushing for 218 yards on 27 carries. His season total sits at 2,436 and he jumped from 12th to 3rd in the all-time single season DIII rankings.
While the Colonels ultimately came up short of winning a conference championship, their season will continue, as they will host Merchant Marine in the Fusion Bowl next Friday at 5pm.
