MBB Tripped Up 76-62 at WPI
WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) netted a team-high 17 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds to propel WPI to a 76-62 win against visiting Curry in a non-conference men's basketball matchup on Tuesday evening. With the win, WPI remains undefeated at 5-0 while the Colonels dip to 0-6 on the season.
WPI jumped out to an 11-0 lead, behind six points from Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT) and a defense that forced the Colonels to miss their six shots and commit six turnovers during the opening 6:25. Curry, who was playing its third game away from home in the past four nights, would use a 15-2 spurt to slice the advantage to 15-13 midway through the opening stanza but would never get closer. WPI never led by less then five points in the second half but never pulled away, taking its biggest advantage at 14 when Robinson drained a 3-pointer for the game's final points.
Perez's double-double was his first of the season and the third of his career. He led four WPI players in double figure scoring. Robinson finished with 15 points while Ben Etten (Hollis, NH) and Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) added 13 and 11 respectively. Etten added to his strong all around performance with a team-high five assists to go along with seven boards and two steals. Carr and Bennett Lessard (Belgrade, ME) each grabbed six rebounds.
Mark Mastrullo (Billerica, MA) paced all players with 18 points for Curry, including 13 in the first half. Philippe Jourdain (Cambridge, MA) chipped in with 13 points, three assists and three steals for the Colonels while A.J. Stephens (Stamford, CT) contributed 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Mastrullo dished out a game-high six assists for the visitors.
The start marks just the seventh time WPI has began a basketball season 5-0 (1904-05, 1942-43, 1981-82, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2008-09, 2009-10). The Engineers have accomplished it four times in the last six years under head coach Chris Bartley.
Both teams return to the hardwood on Thursday evening. WPI embarks upon a two-game road trip with a trip to Lasell for a 7pm contest while Curry heads to Wheelock for a 7:30pm affair.
