Men's Basketball Win 2OT Thriller on Senior Night
Milton, MA - The Curry Men's Basketball team won in double-overtime on Tuesday night 108-98 over Gordon, improving to 7-17 on the season, and 3-12 in CNE play. Gordon is now 7-17 and 6-9.
Prior to the game the Colonels recognized their five seniors Jake Bernardo, Shawn Charles, Ebube Agbaji, James Scali, and Francisco Lopez.
The two teams traded basket for the first eight minutes of the game, but then the Fighting Scots began to pull away by going on a 10-2 run. The Colonels got back within one point at 25-24 with six minutes left in the half, but Gordon extended it back out to 11 by the end of the half at 44-33.
Gordon went up by as many as 17 points early in the second half, and seemingly was going to coast to a win. But the Colonels began to mount a comeback, and slowly chipped away. They got the deficit back under 10 points with seven minutes left, and continued the run they were on to get within two with five minutes left. They then took a brief 72-70 lead with just under four minutes left. The two teams would go back-and-forth the remainder of regulation, and the Colonels had the ball with 20 seconds left with the game tied at 80, but were unable to get a shot off. In overtime neither team ever led by more than three, and with 30 seconds left Isaiah Andino was fouled on a three pointer, and made all three free throws to tie the game at 89. This time Gordon was unable to get a shot off, and the game went to double-overtime. After Gordon made a lay up early in the period, back-to-back three pointers by Andino gave the Colonels momentum that they would never give up, and they would win 108-98.
On senior night, it was freshman Isaiah Andino who led the team, scoring 32 points on 10-19 shooting, including going 5-5 on three pointers, three of which came in the second OT period. Tommy Mallinson was right behind him with 30 points, a career high for the junior. Playing his last game at home, Ebube Agbaji recorded career highs in points (10) and rebounds (10), good for his first career double-double. Also scoring in double-digits in his last career home game was James Scali with 18.
First double-overtime game since December 27, 2019, when the Colonels lost 103-98 at Staten Island. The Colonels had lost all three of their previous 2OT games dating back to the 1997-1998 season.
The 108 points are tied for the sixth most points scored in a game in program history.
Up Next - The Colonels will wrap up their season on Saturday at Nichols at 3pm.
