Hockey Knocks Off Western New England, 4-2
MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Western New England University, 4-2, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday night in Milton, Mass. The Colonels improve to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Golden Bears fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ECAC Northeast.
Curry was the first to get on the board midway through the first period when junior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) scored off a loose puck in front of the net. Sophomore Joshua Pineiro (Huntington, Calif.) and freshman Robert Kleiman (DeWitt, Mich.) were credited with the assists. The Colonels outshot the Golden Bears 14-7.
Just 9:33 into the second period, Western New England tied the game. The Golden Bears took advantage of a three on one situation and freshman Rance Vokovic (Lansdale, Pa.) earned the goal for his team. Sophomore John Kelly (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman Aaron Ziegler (Schwonksville, Pa.) each had an assist. Just over two minutes later Curry regained the lead off a goal by senior Steven Mohler (Yorba Linda, Calif.). Mohler took a slap shot that went right over Western New England’s goaltender, sophomore Eric Sorenson (Fairport, N.Y.) glove. Pineiro got his second assist on the night and senior Josh Kamrass (Norcross, Ga.) earned his first. The Colonels took control of this period in shots with Curry having 19 and Western New England six.
Western New England once again tied the game just 2:30 into the final frame. Sophomore Trenton Krueger (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored his first of the night on assists by sophomore Dan Monahan (Monroe, N.Y.) and senior Kory Grahi (San Diego, Calif.). The teams battled for most of the period with each squad having an opportunity to score the game-winner. Curry held just a slight advantage in shots with 11 and Western New England 10. Both goaltenders made great saves to keep the teams tied at two apiece. It wasn’t until the 17:52 mark that the Colonels would score their third goal for the victory. Senior Payden Benning (Estevan, SK) received a pass from teammate, senior Ryan Barlock (Chicago, Ill.) for the game-winning goal. Junior Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.) scored an empty net goal for his teams fourth with just 29 seconds to play. Kamrass and freshman Jordan Reed (Ajax, ON) had the assists.
Curry finished with a total of 43 shots while Western New England finished with 24.
Curry’s freshman goaltender, Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y) made 22 total saves in net for the win and Western New England’s Sorenson made 39 saves in net in the loss.
Curry's next game is at home on Tuesday, November 22 at 7:35 p.m. against Tufts University. Western New England hosts Manhattanville on Tuesday, November 22 for a 7:15 p.m. game start.
