Hockey Falls to Visiting Hamilton College, 6-5, in Overtime
MILTON, Mass.- Hamilton College defeated Curry College 6-5, in overtime, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon in Milton, Mass. With the win the Continentals improve to 4-4-1, while the Colonels fell to 7-2 overall.
Hamilton was the first to get on the board just under five minutes into the opening frame. Senior Anthony Scarpino (Meadville, Pa.) received a pass from sophomore Michael DiMare (Medford, Mass.). DiMare got the puck from senior Bryan Kelly (Plymouth, Mass.) who won the face-off. The Continentals’ goal was off a power-play. Junior Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.) was called for boarding which led to the man-up goal. It didn’t take long for Curry to respond with a power-play goal of their own. Hamilton’s sophomore Evan Haney (Sainte-Marthe, Quebec) was called for boarding to give the Colonels the advantage. At the 7:50 mark, sophomore Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) took a slap shot in front of the net that soared past the Continentals’ sophomore goaltender Joseph Quattrocchi (Kanada, ONT.). Sophomores Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) and Joshua Pineiro (Huntington, Calif.) were credited with the assists. Both teams combined for eight penalties in the period. Curry outshot Hamilton 15-9.
The Continental’s took the lead just 7:49 into the second period off another power-play. Scarpino scored his second of the night when he found a loose puck and sent it past the Colonel’s freshman goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.). Senior Samuel Choate (Weston, Mass.) and Kelly each earned the assists. Despite Curry outshooting Hamilton 16-10, the Colonels went scoreless in the frame.
The third period saw seven goals scored, four by Curry and three by Hamilton. The Colonels tied the game midway through the final period. Junior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) scored the tying goal off assists from freshman Robert Kleiman (DeWitt, Mich.) and junior Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta). Curry took the lead 3:26 later off a goal by senior Mike Kavanagh (Little Neck, N.Y.). Kavanagh beat a Hamilton defender off passes from freshman Jordan Reed (Ajax, ONT.) and senior Payden Benning (Estevan, SK). The Continentals then went on a three goal scoring spree within 1:11 minutes. Scarpino, Kelly and freshman Patrick Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) each scored on the run. Scarpino enjoyed a hat trick off his third goal on the night. With less than three minutes left in regulation Curry was able to put away two more to even the score and send the teams into overtime. Brugman was the first to score to bring his team within one. Seniors Ryan Barlock (Chicago, Ill.) and DeLong were on the assists. At 18:58 on the clock, Benning scored the tying goal. Benning was assisted by senior John Williams (Flourtown, Pa.) and junior George Isham (Chicago, Ill.). Once again the Colonels outshot the Continentals in the period, 14-8.
With just 59 seconds in overtime, DiMare scored the winning goal, shorthanded. DiMare, who also finished with four assists, received the pass from Scarpino. Both DiMare and Scarpino led all goal scorers with five points apiece.
Curry finished with a total of 46 shots while Hamilton finished with 28. The Colonels went 1 for 8 on power-plays while the Continentals went 2 for 8.
Hamiltons' Quattrocchi made 41 total saves in net for the win. Curry's Mohney made 22 saves in 52:08 minutes of play, while freshman Luc Montoni (Newbury, Mass) who saw his first time in net this season, made zero saves in 12:29 minutes.
Curry's next game is away at Connecticut College on Wednesday, January 4 at 7:00 p.m. Hamilton travels to Colby College on Friday, December 6 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
