Milton, MA - Playing in their first back-to-back of the season, the Curry men's hockey team did not show any fatigue, as they beat Nichols 4-2, finishing off a sweep of the Bison on the weekend. The Colonels are now 4-1-0 on the season, and 3-1-0 in CNE play, while the Bison are 4-4-0 and 3-2-0.
It seemed as if both teams would head to the first intermission scoreless, but a shot from the point by Casper Soderling was deflected by Manny Cabral and then Mason Kesselring, putting the Colonels up 1-0 after one. They would then double their lead five minutes into the second period, this time on a power play goal, their 6th of the weekend, from Jesse Galassi. That goal was assisted by Karim Gayfullin and goalie Thomas Heaney, as Heaney had a great pass up ice while the Bison were in the middle of a change. The Colonels would take the 2-0 lead into the third, but the Bison scored a PP goal of their own six minutes in. While this caused some concern for the Colonels, they answered immediately, as Andrew Morton scored his first career goal less than 30 seconds later. Down 3-1, the Bison pulled their goalie early, and were able to get one back with two and a half minutes left. They would continue to push for an equalizer, but an empty net goal from Galassi would put the game away. Galassi shot the puck from behind the opposite goal line, and it went the length of the ice before stopping in the net. Heaney also had an assist on that goal, producing a very rare two assist game from a goalie.
Along with the two assists, Heaney stopped 22 of 24 shots he saw. The Colonels outshot the Bison 27-24, and won the faceoff battle 29-23. Both teams went an identical 1-6 on the power play.
Galassi, a senior defenseman, had never scored multiple goals in a game before this weekend, and did so in both games. Of his 10 career goals, five have come against Nichols.
Up Next - The Colonels will return to play next Saturday when they host Rivier at 3pm.
