Lanham Scores Four Goals Including Game-Winner to Lift Men's Lacrosse Over Salem State, 8-7
SALEM, Mass. – Russell Lanham (Silver Springs, MD) scored four goals, including the game-winner with 1:08 remaining, as the Curry College Colonels defeated the Salem State University Vikings 8-7 on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.
The Colonels improve to 2-1 on the season. Netminder Michael Hibbard (North Chelmsford, MA) earned the win with 28 saves on 35 shots. Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, MA) took the loss turning away 18 of 26 shots on goal. The Vikings record now stands at 1-1 for the season.
Connor Arnold (Clifton Park, NY) put the first point on the board to give the Colonels the lead with 4:23 left in the quarter. At 13:44 in the second period John O'Donnell (Middleton, MA) fed Lanham who beat Gill for the 2-0 lead. Salem Sate's Robert Mulroy (Swampscott, MA) brought the game back to within a goal at 8:49 with an unassisted goal against Hibbard. Lanham and Joseph Natale (Haverhill, MA) responded with a pair of goals to give Curry a 4-1 lead at halftime.
The teams combined to score seven back-to-back goals in the third quarter. Ryan Ostler (Billerica, MA), assisted by Ryan Grendeau (Danvers, MA), began the Viking's offensive flurry with a goal at the 13:16 mark. Lanham responded back with his third goal of the contest at 13:12. The next four goals were exchanged by Salem State's Greg Shidler (Peabody, MA) and Sean Gallagher of the Colonels.
Grendeau capped the quarter with a goal assisted by Shidler to make the score 7-5 in Curry's favor. In the fourth quarter Salem State rallied as Mulroy scored two quick goals, both assisted by Shidler, to tie the game at 7-7 with just over two minutes reamining. However, Lanham answered a minute later for the Colonels in regulation to seal the victory.
Salem State University will host Gordon College on Friday afternoon at four o'clock. Curry College will host conference rival Western New England College Friday afternoon. (Game recap courtesy of Salem State Sports Information)
