SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team fell 6-2 to Springfield College on Tuesday night at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. The Colonels fought back with a pair of second-half goals from Aiden Watts and Aidan Auclair, but it was too late to mount the large lead the Pride had established.
Springfield (3-0-1) wasted no time asserting itself, scoring twice in the opening 11 minutes. Parker Thornton put the Pride ahead in the 5th minute before Connor Policarpio doubled the advantage just six minutes later. The hosts extended their lead before halftime when Robby Herrera finished off a combination play assisted by Parker Gustine and Talan Bradley in the 39th minute, giving Springfield a 3-0 cushion at the break.
The Pride continued their offensive pressure early in the second half. Jared Kelly struck twice in quick succession, scoring in the 49th and 53rd minutes to push the lead to 5-0. Curry (1-3-1) answered soon after when Watts calmly buried a penalty kick in the 57th minute for his third goal of the season. The Colonels kept battling and were rewarded again in the 78th minute, as Auclair netted his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Springfield had the final word, however, when Luke McPhillips added an insurance tally in the 87th minute, to cap the scoring at 6-2.
Despite the result, Curry showed resilience in the second half, matching the Pride in shots on goal (6-6) after the break. Goalkeeper Ryan McGourty recorded eight saves against 28 Springfield attempts, helping keep the Colonels in striking distance. Offensively, Curry totaled 12 shots, including eight on target, highlighted by Watts' aggressive play up front and Auclair's late finish.
With the setback, Curry drops to 1-3-1 overall and will look to bounce back at home this Saturday as they square off against the Scots of Gordon College.
