Milton, MA - The Curry College men's volleyball team participated in it's final two matches of the season at home versus Fisher College and Russell Sage College on Saturday inside Katz Gymasium. They earned a decisive straight-set victory over Fisher College, 3-0, but would later fall in a fifth set thriller against the Gators of Russell Sage.
Game #1:
The Colonels controlled the match from the outset, taking the first set 25-13 behind a balanced offensive attack and efficient hitting. Curry continued to dictate play in the second set, pulling away for a 25-15 win before closing out the sweep with a 25-11 victory in the third.
Curry finished the match hitting .215 as a team, compared to -.269 for Fisher, capitalizing on the Falcons' 29 attack errors.
LJ Hernandez led the way for the Colonels with four kills, five service aces, and six total blocks, impacting the match in all phases. Nicholas Watson added four kills on an efficient .429 hitting percentage, while Justin Buckley chipped in three kills and two service aces. Hashim Khan also contributed three kills without an error.
Nyko Whitaker orchestrated the offense with a match-high 13 assists, while Connor Kennedy added four assists. Defensively, Abdiel Ixlaj recorded three digs, and multiple Colonels contributed at the net as Curry totaled 12 team blocks.
Fisher was led by Thomas Bollentin with three kills, while Carlos Diaz added two kills and two service aces.
Game #2:
Curry came out strong in their second match of the day, taking the opening set 25-18. The Colonels were paced early by a balanced offensive attack before Russell Sage responded by claiming the next two sets in narrow fashion, 25-22 and 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Refusing to back down, Curry answered in the fourth set with a hard-fought 25-21 victory. The Colonels recorded a match-high 17 kills in the frame to force a fifth set.
In the final set, however, Russell Sage pulled away late, securing a 15-10 win to clinch the match.
Offensively, Curry was led by Jayden Garcia, who turned in an outstanding performance with 15 kills on a .500 hitting percentage to go along with two service aces and three blocks. With the blocks, he registered his 100th of his career. Chris Milfort also contributed 15 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double, while Nicholas Watson chipped in 13 kills. Setter Nyko Whitaker dished out 41 assists in the effort.
Defensively, Braden Alpert anchored the back row with a team-high 12 digs, while Milo Barry Young made his presence felt at the net with six block assists.
As a team, Curry finished with 55 kills and 12 total blocks, but the Gators did just enough to hold the Colonels from the comeback.
The Gators were led by Dylan Fox who recorded 14 kills and Anthony Guetti who registered 47 assists.
