Irwin Garners CCC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference Accolades
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) of the Curry College women's basketball team has been named as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-CCC Selection, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This marks the second year in a row that Irwin has been named to the First Team All-Conference and the second time in three years she has brought home a major award as she was named the CCC Rookie of the Year award in 2016.
Irwin earns the Defensive Player of the Year award after she was a pest on that end of the floor, leading both the conference and Division III in steals per game (5.56). She also led all of Division III women's basketball in total steals with 139. The junior captain also led the conference in points per game (18.2), assists per game (4.6) and ranked fifth in rebounds per game (7.3), leading to her First Team All-CCC nod.
Irwin was a one-time CCC and ECAC Northeast Player of the Week selection this season. Additionally, she was a three-time selection to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Weekly Honor Roll.
