Women's Basketball Falls to Nor'Easters 71-57
Biddeford, ME - Curry College women's basketball opened with a strong first half showing but could not keep pace over the final two quarters, falling 71–57 to the University of New England at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Colonels set the tone early, with efficient scoring and holding UNE to just 13 points in the opening quarter. Samantha Conti helped to orchestrate the offense from the start, attacking the lane and distributing effectively, while Kasey Reeves provided a steady inside presence.
UNE responded in the second quarter, tightening defensively and finding rhythm offensively to edge Curry 17–12 in the frame. Despite the shift in momentum, Curry remained poised and went into halftime trailing narrowly 30-29. Sophie Hilbrunner was perfect at the free-throw line and added key buckets, while Lauren Dunn contributed on both ends of the floor to keep the game close.
The Nor'Easters began to control the glass in the third, which helped them outscore Curry 22–18 in the period. Although the Colonels continued to shoot well from the field, turnovers and missed opportunities at the line limited their ability to regain the lead. Conti was a standout throughout the quarter, finishing with 11 points, five assists, and five steals, showcasing her two-way impact.
The home team carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, using depth and timely perimeter shooting to pull away. The Nor'easters outscored Curry 19–10 in the final frame, capitalizing on miscues and converting at the free-throw line down the stretch. Maddy Werner led UNE with 15 points, while Sydney Jenisch and Gabby Soter added consistent scoring to seal the outcome.
For Curry, Hilbrunner and Conti each scored 11 points, while Reeves chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. The Colonels shot over 51 percent from the field, an encouraging offensive mark, but struggled at the free-throw line and were hurt by 24 turnovers, which UNE turned into key scoring chances.
Up Next: The Colonels are set for a road matchup on the far side of the state, taking on the Ephs of Williams College on Saturday.
