Canton, MA - The Curry Women's Hockey team kicked off their season with a win on Friday, defeating Manhattanville 3-0. The two teams played twice last year at Manhattanville, with the Valiants winning both games.
Despite the first period being scoreless, the Colonels dominated play, and outshot their opponents 16-5. They continued to pressure the Valiants defense in the second, and were able to break through on a Morgan Slough wrist shot that got past the goalie. It was the freshman Slough's first career goal, and it was assisted by Tommi Nash and Megan Sawatzky. The Colonels would take that 1-0 lead into the third period.
Having graduated 13 players from last season, the Colonels were going to need some production from their second leading goal scorer from a year ago in Bella Mardesich, and that is just what she did. After a couple nice passes from Slough and Aria Kader, Mardesich made a move, and pocketed the puck in the net to double the Colonels lead. Curry would get an empty net goal from Grace Inoue to win the game 3-0.
The Colonels outshot the Valiants 43-20, and won 37 of the 64 faceoffs, led by Kayley Hansen, who won 12 of 15.
Goalie Coriann Hoag picked up the win posting the shutout.
Up Next - The Colonels will look to sweep the two game series, as they host the Valiants again on Saturday at 3pm.
