Curry College fell to UMass Dartmouth on the road Friday evening 2-1, after the Corsairs found game-winner in waning minutes
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to UMass Dartmouth on Friday night at Cressy Field. Despite controlling stretches of play and generating nine shots on goal, the Colonels were undone by a late tally in the 89th minute.
Curry (2-1-0) struck first midway through the opening half. In the 15th minute, junior midfielder Nicole Hudson found the back of the net off a setup from Jovi Goldstein, giving the Colonels an early 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Hudson's sixth of the season, as she continues her hot start to 2025.
The Corsairs (2-1-1) answered in the 28th minute when Natalie Frazier capitalized on a feed from Kiariana Williams to even the score at 1-1. The first half ended with UMass Dartmouth holding an 11-4 edge in shots, but Curry goalkeeper Lexi Smardon came up with three key saves to keep the match level.
The second half saw Curry tilt the field in its favor, outshooting the Corsairs 10-8 and pressing for a go-ahead goal. Sophomore forward Mia Schena proved especially dangerous, putting all three of her shots on target, while Laney Phillips and Sarah Crusse each forced saves from UMD keeper Marina Cassano, who finished with eight stops on the night.
Curry's back line, anchored by Abigail Hart and Sage Carmody, held strong as the match entered the closing minutes still deadlocked. However, with just over a minute remaining in regulation, Frazier struck again for UMass Dartmouth, pouncing on a loose ball and finishing unassisted to put the hosts ahead 2-1.
The Colonels pressed forward in the final moments, but the late breakthrough proved decisive as Curry suffered its first loss of the season.
UMass Dartmouth finished with a 19-14 edge in total shots, while Curry earned three corner kicks to the Corsairs' four. Goalkeepers Smardon and Emma Waldeck combined for six saves for the Colonels, while Cassano's eight stops secured the win for UMD.
Curry will look to bounce back when it returns home for its next matchup on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Anchormen of Rhode Island College.
