Women’s Soccer Drops Tight Conference Opener to Gordon
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College women's soccer battled through a physical 90 minutes but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field. The contest marked the Conference of New England (CNE) opener for both teams, with the Colonels falling to 2-3-0 (0-1-0 CNE) while the Fighting Scots improved to 2-3-0 (1-0-0 CNE).
The first half featured few clear scoring chances as both defenses held firm. Curry generated a pair of early corner kicks and looks on frame, including an effort from Sarah Crusse that sailed high and a shot from Mia Schena that drifted wide. Gordon's Eowyn Lapp proved to be a constant threat, firing multiple attempts, but Curry goalkeeper Lexi Smardon came up with key saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Lapp broke free and finished an unassisted strike past Smardon to give Gordon the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Lapp's first of the season and proved to be the decisive moment. Curry responded with increased pressure, including shots from Abigail Hart and Schena, but Gordon keeper Ivy Daniel was steady in net.
Gordon finished with a 14-4 edge in total shots, led by Lapp's 10 attempts, while Curry managed two shots in each half. Schena recorded the Colonels' lone shot on goal, while Hart and Crusse also registered attempts. Smardon tallied two saves while facing consistent pressure, keeping Curry within striking distance throughout the second half.
The Colonels fought until the final whistle, earning late substitutions to add fresh legs and push forward, but Gordon's defense held firm to secure the narrow conference win.
Curry will look to regroup as they play at home again on Wednesday, September 17th vs UMass Boston at 7 PM.
