Women’s Soccer Battles Wentworth to Scoreless Draw in CNE Action
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team held firm defensively to earn a 0-0 draw against Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Conference of New England (CNE) contest Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field. The result moves the Colonels to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play, while the Leopards stand at 3-1-4 (0-1-1 CNE).
The opening half was tightly contested, with both sides searching for a breakthrough. Curry generated an early chance in the 15th minute when Mia Schena fired on target, but her effort was stopped by Wentworth goalkeeper Emily Gamboa Ordini. On the other end, the Leopards' Bryce Bateman tested Colonels keeper Lexi Smardon with a pair of shots, but the senior stood strong between the posts. Wentworth carried a 5-2 advantage in shots at the break, though the score remained level at 0-0.
The pace quickened in the second half as both teams pushed forward. Curry nearly grabbed the lead in the 62nd minute when first-year midfielder Sophia Curletti forced a save with a strike from the edge of the box. Smardon continued to shine for the Colonels, recording four second-half saves, including a crucial stop on Bateman in the 77th minute to preserve the shutout.
Curry's best late chance came from substitute Catia Fernandes, whose attempt just missed the frame in the 82nd minute. Despite five second-half shots and three corner kicks, the Colonels were unable to find the decisive goal.
Smardon finished with six saves on 14 Wentworth attempts, earning her second shutout of the season. Schena paced the Curry attack with three shots, including one on goal, while Curletti and Samantha DeRuosi each added efforts on target.
The Colonels will take to the field again on Tuesday evening as they travel to Framingham State for a night game at 7 PM.
