Women’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw at Western New England
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer battled Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon to a 0-0 draw in Conference of New England (CNE) play at Suprenant Field. With the result, the Colonels move to 4-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference action, while the Golden Bears sit at 4-4-4 (2-2-1 CNE).
From the opening whistle, both teams showcased strong defensive organization and goalkeeping composure. The Golden Bears carried the edge in possession and offensive pressure, outshooting Curry 23-4 on the afternoon, but junior goalkeeper Lexi Smardon anchored the Colonels with a standout performance. Smardon finished with eight saves, recording her second shutout of the season and keeping Western New England off the board despite numerous scoring opportunities.
Curry's back line, led by defenders Abigail Hart, Gabriella Wiesner, and Sarah Crusse, weathered wave after wave of Golden Bear attacks, blocking shots and limiting dangerous second-chance opportunities. Smardon came up clutch in the closing minutes, turning aside a pair of on-target attempts from Western New England's Gabby Sansone and Emily Smith to preserve the draw.
On the attacking end, the Colonels made the most of their limited opportunities. Sophomore forward Lilliana Redman registered one of Curry's best chances midway through the second half, forcing a save from Western New England keeper Ainsley Napolitano, who made two saves in the shutout. Senior Jovi Goldstein also contributed offensively, recording two shots — one on target — as the Colonels looked to break the deadlock.
The match marked Curry's third result in their last four contests, reflecting continued defensive resilience and improvement in conference play. The Colonels now turn their attention to a key CNE matchup this weekend, as they return home to Walter M. Katz Field on Saturday for a game at 3:30 PM.
