MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team came up short on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Johnson & Wales University (RI) in a Conference of New England (CNE) matchup at Walter M. Katz Field. With the result, the Colonels move to 4-6-3 overall and (1-3-2 CNE), while the Wildcats improve to 6-7-1 (4-2-0 CNE).
Johnson & Wales struck early, capitalizing on an opportunity just seven minutes into the contest. Sophia Iovino opened the scoring off a corner kick, putting the Wildcats ahead 1-0. The Colonels worked to settle in defensively, with goalkeeper Lexi Smardon making five first-half saves to keep the deficit at one heading into the break.
In the second half, the Wildcats continued to press the attack and doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Jamie Davies converted following a buildup that originated from Jessica Lee. Just six minutes later, Davies struck again, this time unassisted, to secure her second goal of the match and extend the Johnson & Wales advantage to 3-0.
Curry generated a pair of late opportunities in the final 20 minutes but was unable to break through the Wildcats' back line. Lindsey Barfield and Samantha DeRuosi each registered shots, with Barfield recording the team's lone shot on goal. Despite the limited offensive chances, the Colonels remained composed defensively and avoided further damage thanks to Smardon's steady play in net.
Smardon finished the afternoon with nine saves on 12 shots on goal, marking another strong performance for the senior keeper.
The Colonels will look to regroup as they return to conference play next week. They are set to host the Hawks of Roger Williams under the lights on Katz Field at 7 PM.
