SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Curry College women's tennis team suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to Western New England University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Volvo Tennis Courts.
With the defeat, Curry falls to 0-5 overall on the season and 0-2 in the CCC.
In doubles play, Western New England jumped out to a 2-1 lead by winning at the first and third flights, but Curry's sophomore tandem of Cayla Osowski (Westfield, Mass.) and Grace Coopee (Hampden, Mass.) secured a point for the visitors, winning 8-7 (7-4 tiebreaker).
Freshman Esme Lehner (Annapolis, Md.) pulled the match even once singles play began, winning 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth slot. Coopee and classmate Samantha Ferrara (Brewster, N.Y.) also secured victories at fourth and sixth singles respectively for the Colonels, but wins by Western New England at first and third singles turned all attention to court two for the deciding match.
Curry sophomore Serena Wilson (Windsor, Conn.) fell in the opening set, but won the tiebreaker in a second set to force a winner-take-all third. Wilson and Golden Bear senior Arriana Hasiuk needed another tiebreaker in set three, but Hasiuk came out on top 7-5 to secure the victory for her team.
Curry will return to action on Thursday, wrapping up a three-match road trip with a CCC contest at Salve Regina. First serves are slated for 3:30 p.m.
