MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team warmed up for its match on Thursday night against visiting Wentworth wearing "We Dig Pink" t-shirts and pink ribbons to support breast cancer awareness for the month of October.
On the court, the Colonels put forth another solid effort, but fell to the Leopards, 3-0. Curry closed out its inaugural season of women's volleyball with a 2-15 record. Wentworth improved to 8-19 overall, with conference matches against Regis and Colby-Sawyer this Saturday.
The visiting Leopards shot out to a 12-1 lead in the first set then cruised to a 25-9 win. The hosts played a closely-contested second set, trailing by only two points on two separate occasions (11-9, 14-12). But Wentworth closed on an 11-5 run to wrap up the middle set. After trailing 18-7 in the final set, the Colonels wound up outscoring their opponent 10-7 the rest of the way, but could not overcome the 11-point deficit.
Playing in her last collegiate match, Curry senior right-side hitter Valerie Harrison (East Boston, Mass.) put away a team-high five kills. Freshmen Jessica Crugnale (North Reading, Mass.) and Jenna Butera (Norfolk, Mass.) shared team-high honors with 10 digs apiece.
Beginning in 2011, the Colonels will play a full conference schedule against Roger Williams, Endicott, Gordon, Salve Regina, Western New England, the University of New England and Wentworth.
