Milton, MA - The Curry Women's Volleyball team split their tri-match on Saturday, beating Elmira in five sets, before falling to MCLA in three. The Colonels are now 2-3 on the season, already passing their win total from last year.
Match One vs Elmira
In the best match of the three on Saturday, the Colonels took down Elmira 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10. After a mostly uncompetitive first set that saw the Eagles race out to an 8-0 lead, the Colonels began to turn things around in the second set. Trailing 17-11, a kill by Morgan Kramer gave the Colonels the serve, and Kramer herself went on a run, scoring four consecutive service aces to make it 17-16. The Eagles would stretch the set lead back out to 23-18, but the Colonels would then go on a 7-0 run behind three Kramer kills, and two Jasmyne Fillippini aces. The run gave the Colonels the set 25-23.
The third set was more of a back and forth affair, but up 13-12, the Colonels went on a 6-0 run, again behind the serving of Fillippini. The Eagles would make a run late, but it was not enough, as the Colonels took the set 25-22.
Seemingly having the momentum for the first time in the match, the Colonels took an early 6-3 lead in the fourth. The two teams would trade points, and were tied at 19, 21, and 22. But the Eagles would score the last three points of the set, and send the match to a fifth and final set.
The Colonels then reversed the roles from the first set, and started the fifth on a 7-0 run, again behind Fillippini serving. The Eagles would get within two at 11-9, but the Colonels would close things out, and take the set 15-10.
It was a team effort for Curry, as everybody contributed. On Offense, Morgan Kramer led the way with 14 kills on 47 attempts. The 47 attack attempts ranks just outside the top 10 in a five set match in program history. Freshman Kyla Martin recorded her first double-digit kill match, finishing off 12 points on 35 attempts. Jasmyne Fillippini directed the traffic, collecting 21 set assists. Her biggest contribution though came in the service game. She tied a program record with seven aces in a five set match. As a team, the Colonels had 17 aces, tied for the second most in a five set match in program history. On top of that, Fillippini also tied for the team lead with 16 digs, giving her the first double-double of her career. Also with 16 digs was libero Sonja Matheson.
Match Two vs MCLA
The Colonels came out slow, and lost the first set 25-5 in this one, and they were never able to completely recover. They would fall in the next two sets 25-13 and 25-19. Meghan Abbott led the team with four kills.
Up Next - The Colonels will continue their season on Tuesday, when they travel to Bridgewater State for a 6pm match.
