Women’s Volleyball Falls to Salve Regina on Senior Day
Curry College Women's Volleyball closed out its season with a loss against Commonwealth Coast Conference Salve Regina Seahawks in the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium Thursday evening.
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College Women's Volleyball closed out its season with a loss against Commonwealth Coast Conference Salve Regina Seahawks in the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium Thursday evening.
The Colonels fell to the Seahawks of Salve Regina 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-15).
With the loss, Curry closes out their season with an overall record of 4-22, 0-9.
Prior to the opening serve of the Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup, Curry College Women's Volleyball recognized their three seniors in a special senior day celebration. Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.), Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine), and Amber Buttaro (Tewksbury, Mass.) were joined on the court by their friends and family for the ceremony.
The opening set in the conference matchup saw a dominant Salve Regina side. The visiting Seahawks outpaced the Colonels 25-9 in the first set. Meaghan Corkery led her team with four kills on five attacks in the opening set as Curry's Abby Sousa (Seekonk, Mass.) marked two kills for the Colonels.
The second set of the evening saw the two conference sides evenly matched through the first seven points to each team. Curry came within striking distance of the Seahawks following a kill from senior outside hitter Lauren Guzman (8-9). The Colonels would then tie the matchup following a kill by Abby Sousa (9-9). An 11-5 scoring run by the visitors prompted a timeout by head coach Sarah Hollis. Following the timeout, Curry senior setter marked a kill to get the Colonels back into the action. The visiting Seahawks would close out the second set by a final score of 25-17.
The third set began in a similar fashion, with the two CCC sides locked at 7-7. Curry's Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) would then mark a kill to push the Colonels in front, 8-7. The Seahawks would then regain the lead until another kill from Oscar-Phoenix along with an error by the visitors granted the Colonels an 11-10 lead. A 14-4 scoring run by the Seahawks closed out the third and final set and ultimately the contest in Katz Gym.
The Colonels were paced by Lauren Guzman (3 kills, 6 digs), Leah Oscar-Phoenix (5 kills), and Brooke Reissfelder (12 assists).
