Women’s Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to Western New England on Senior Day
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped a 3–0 decision to Western New England University on Saturday at Katz Gymnasium, falling by set scores of 25–15, 25–16, and 25–11 in Conference of New England play.
Prior to the start of the match, the seniors for the Colonels were recognized for their commitment to the program during their Curry tenure. Those recognized include: Morgan Muscato (#10), Lauryn Gedeon (#11), and Sonja Matheson (#15).
Despite a strong opening effort, the Colonels (5–13, 0–5 CNE) couldn't overcome a consistent Western New England (8–13, 1–3 CNE) offense that hit an impressive .253 for the match. The Golden Bears controlled the tempo from the service line and limited Curry's offensive rhythm, finishing with 33 kills and 10 service aces.
Curry showed energy early in the first set, with Ciara Crayton and Emma Hobart providing key kills that helped the Colonels stay close through the midpoint. However, Western New England closed on a decisive run to take the opening frame 25–15. The second set saw the Colonels battle defensively but struggle to find consistency in attack, committing eight errors while the Golden Bears hit .240 to extend their lead.
In the final set, Western New England's balanced offense—led by Charlei Henkel (eight kills, four aces) and Rachel Critz (six kills, two aces)—proved too much for Curry, as the visitors pulled away to secure the sweep.
Hobart paced Curry with five kills and six-and-a-half points, while Crayton added three kills and a block assist. Setter Jasmyne Fillippini led the team with 13 assists and chipped in a dig, while Sonja Matheson anchored the back row with 11 digs. Lauryn Gedeon contributed two kills and two block assists, and Faith Edgehille added six digs in the defensive effort.
The Colonels will now have their eyes set on Suffolk on Wednesday, October 22, when they travel to Boston to meet their CNE foe.
