Women's Lacrosse Wins Home Opener, Defeats RIC 13-4
Milton, MA - The Curry College women's lacrosse team earned its second straight victory on Saturday morning, defeating Rhode Island College 13–4 at Walter M. Katz Field. With the win, the Colonels improve to 2–1 on the season while the Anchormen fall to 0–1.
Rhode Island College struck first when Livia Sweeney scored at the 10:44 mark of the opening quarter. Curry quickly responded, as Ella Palanza evened the score less than a minute later with an unassisted goal. The Colonels then took the lead when Samantha Sprissler finished a pass from Palanza at 8:16. After Sweeney netted her second goal of the quarter to tie the game, Curry regained the advantage in the closing seconds when Sprissler scored off an assist from Sarah Kelly to give the Colonels a 3–2 lead after one.
The Anchormen tied the contest early in the second quarter on a goal from Lily Nees, but Curry responded again, with Kelly scoring once more to restore the lead. The defensive battle continued through the remainder of the period, sending the teams into halftime with Curry holding a narrow 4–3 advantage.
The Colonels then broke the game open in the third quarter with a six-goal surge. Palanza opened the scoring just seconds into the frame, then Grace Grosso added a free-position goal before Palanza struck again moments later to push the lead to 7–3. After Rhode Island College briefly stopped the run with a goal from Giana Franco, Curry responded with three more tallies. Palanza completed her fourth goal of the day, Kelly converted on a man-up opportunity off a feed from Palanza, and Grosso scored off an assist from Ava Doyle to extend the lead to 10–4 heading into the final quarter.
Curry continued to control play in the fourth, adding three more goals to seal the win. Sprissler scored early in the period before Palanza added a free-position goal. Sprissler capped the scoring with her fourth goal of the afternoon off an assist from Grosso with 25 seconds remaining.
Palanza led the Colonels with five goals and two assists, while Sprissler added four goals. Kelly contributed two goals and an assist, and Grosso finished with two goals and one assist. Doyle also recorded an assist.
Defensively, Curry held advantages in shots (24–13), ground balls (19–12), and draw controls (10–8). Goalkeeper Alexa Puopolo earned the win with eight saves in net.
