Women's Lacrosse Drops High Scoring Affair at Norwich
Northfield, VT — The Curry College women's lacrosse team mounted a strong second-half comeback attempt but ultimately fell to undefeated Norwich University, 20–13, on Thursday afternoon at Sabine Field.
With the loss, the Colonels move to 2–2 on the season, while the Cadets improve to 4–0 overall.
Norwich set the tone early, scoring the first goal just 60 seconds into the game. Sarah Kelly answered for Curry midway through the opening quarter with an unassisted tally to tie the contest at 1–1, but the Cadets responded with a six-goal run to close the period and take a commanding 7–1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Cadets extended their advantage in the second quarter, adding three more goals to push the lead to 10–1 late in the half. Curry was able to stop the momentum just before halftime when Samantha Sprissler scored with 24 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 10–2 at the break.
Curry began to find its rhythm in the third quarter as Sprissler opened the frame with her second goal of the game. After Norwich answered with two more tallies, Grace Grosso scored for the Colonels to cut into the margin. Later in the quarter, Sydney Upham converted a man-down goal before Sprissler added another tally on a feed from Nicole Michael, but Norwich maintained a 16–6 lead heading into the final period.
The Colonels produced their most productive stretch of the afternoon in the fourth quarter, scoring seven goals. Kelly started the surge with her second goal of the game before Sprissler scored again off an assist from Ella Palanza. Palanza then found the back of the net herself to bring Curry within seven at 16–9.
Sprissler continued her standout performance with another unassisted goal, and Kelly followed shortly after with her third goal of the game on a pass from Palanza. Grosso and Palanza each added goals during the late run as Curry attempted to close the gap.
Despite the late push, Norwich held on behind a strong offensive effort led by Caitlyn Fielder, who finished with seven goals and two assists.
Sprissler paced the Colonels with five goals, while Kelly added a hat trick. Palanza contributed two goals and three assists, and Grosso finished with a pair of goals for Curry.
Defensively, Goalie Alexa Puopolo, made six saves in goal while playing the full 60 minutes.
