Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

Boston, MA - The Curry College women's lacrosse team opened its 2026 season with a 14-6 road loss to Emerson on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field. With the setback, the Colonels fall to 0-1 overall, while the Lions improve to 2-0.
Emerson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Ella Palanza got Curry on the board with a free position goal at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter. After the Lions responded with two more tallies, the Colonels capitalized on a man-up opportunity when Nicole Michael finished a feed from Grace Grosso to make it 4-2. Emerson added one more goal late in the quarter to take a 5-2 lead after one.
Curry came out strong in the second quarter. Sarah Kelly converted on a free position attempt just 52 seconds in to cut the deficit to 5-3, and Grosso followed with an unassisted goal at 9:13 to bring the Colonels within one. Emerson answered with a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the half, sending Curry into the break trailing 7-4.
The Lions seized control in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals, including two on free position opportunities, to extend their lead to 10-4 heading into the final frame.
Michael opened the fourth-quarter scoring with her second goal of the game at 13:42, but Emerson responded with four of the next five tallies. Sydney Upham added a free position goal at 7:19 for Curry's final score of the afternoon.
Michael led the Colonels with two goals and six shots, while Kelly and Palanza each recorded a goal on four and five shots, respectively. Grosso contributed a goal and an assist, and Upham added a tally. Defensively, Phoebe Sartory and Sarah Joseph each collected four ground balls, while Julia Long caused three turnovers. Michael controlled a team-high seven draws as Curry and Emerson split draw controls at 11 apiece.
Goalkeeper Alexa Puopolo made nine saves in 60 minutes of action. Curry finished 3-for-6 on free position attempts and 16-for-21 on clears.
Up Next: The Colonels will host their first home game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, hosting the Lasell University Lasers at 4 PM.
